The Beeps Summer Drawing Workshop for Children at Chelsea Physic Garden
Summer 2022, I was so excited that at long last I could host the first ever The Beeps Summer Drawing Workshop for Children at Chelsea Physic Garden.
The Workshop was held at Chelsea Physic Garden because The Weeping Mulberry Bush that has been quietly and magnificently growing there for as long as I can remember is the real life inspiration for the ‘Bush-Houses’, the cosy homes of The Wot-a-Lots-The-Beeps.
After our Drawing Workshop, the Children, their Parents and I all went to visit The Weeping Mulberry Bush in the garden itself.
Very big thank you to Sloane Stanley and Chelsea Physic Garden.

Creating
currently known as
One beautiful sunny afternoon while I was at my desk drawing in my studio, I was inspired to create The Wot-a-Lots® (renaming them The Beeps® eleven years later). These little characters and their world were inspired by my family, friends and life experiences.
Initially, I started drawing and writing up all my ideas for the Wot-a-Lots® just one or two evenings a week, after I had finished all the illustration and graphic design jobs for my clients.
However, this project rapidly developed into a burning passion, and I would often work all through the night on my Wot-a-Lots®, in an attempt to try and transfer the mass of ideas, images and information about the Wot-a-Lots® and their world that were in my head onto paper.
This resulted in me producing hundreds and hundreds of sketches, diagrams, illustrations, photos and maps. I made models of all the characters, their homes and transport. I wrote over a hundred stories, as well as minutely detailed descriptions of all the Wot-a-Lots habits, jobs, eccentricities and daily life in their world as well as fully comprehensive Style Guides and Writers Manual.
From the very start of this project, I intended to design a lot of characters, and wanted to devise a family surname that clearly expressed this. I eventually came up with the name The Wot-a-Lots®, inspired by what-a-lot of characters I was drawing!
The forename of each character to clearly describe his or her main personality trait, for instance, I named the Sleepy one ‘Sleep-a-Lot’ (subsequently renaming him ‘Sleepy-Beep’).
All the characters and their Pet-Friends were designed using a basic egg shape. With unique facial features, hairstyles, clothes, footwear and accessories designed especially for every individual character. I have created over fifty two Wot-a-Lots®/Beeps® characters in total, -one for each week of the year! Written over a hundred stories about them too.
About eleven years later, after I was was woken up in the middle of the night by my inspired idea for the Beep-Beep Tree, I thought it was about the right time to rename my lovely little characters and their world The Beeps®. So I named them after this new special tree in preparation for their big exciting animated global adventure they were about to embark upon.
It took me until 2005 to raise the funding required to get my project made into an animated pre-school television show. At the time, it was the biggest ever financial investment Channel 5 had made into a pre-school animated television show.
Episode 1 of The Beeps “THE LOST SOCKS.” Written by Nick Wilson. Premiered and Broadcast in the UK at 7.20 am Monday 12th March 2007 on Channel Five Milkshake!
A total of 67 x11 minute CGI Animated episodes were made for Channel 5.
The Beeps® distributed worldwide by Southern Star and Endemol Distribution.
To date the show has been sold to over sixty seven countries all around the world.
